SPECIAL FEATURE: TEGBE AND RESTRUCTURING

TEGBE AND RESTRUCTURING

Restructuring is currently the most discussed word in the political history of Nigeria with political and non-political actors pushing forward their ideas and perspectives of what they think the concept means and the way it should be. There are two basic models for restructuring Nigeria: a conservative model aimed at maintaining the status quo by simply asking the federal government to shed off some of its exclusive powers and the radical model which calls for a fundamental devolution of powers to the states as federating units and a lean federal government with few exclusive powers over external relations.

Both models are in agreement about fundamental defects in the system because of the over-centralization of the federal system resulting from decades of unitary rule by military governments with the attendant central command structure; thus the call for the restructuring of Nigeria.

Restructuring and devolution of power has been on the front burner of agitations especially in the south west of Nigeria.

Many candidates for National Assembly positions shy away from addressing this issue, because they want to be seen as politically correct by their masters. They are afraid to speak the minds of the people they want to represent. One wonders how they hope to be the voice people in the chambers of the National Assembly.

Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe stands out like a golden rooster among the flock. He represents the hopes and yearnings of the people especially in Oyo South senatorial district.

On a radio programme today 14th January 2023, JT bared his mind on this and related issues.

In his opinion, secession or break up of the country is not restructuring. It is about being determined to restructure governance. It is essentially rearranging the powers given to each tier of government. Autonomy for local government as a third tier of government is part of this.

State policing is also a big issue that must be addressed, according to Mogaji Tegbe.

Tegbe opines that Independent Power Production by state governments should be part of the package.

This is the will of the people.

A person who wants to represent his people must know their hopes and wishes. He must speak their minds.

JT does not fear to speak the mind of his people. He is one of them,
