KANO EMIRATE: ASSEMBLY DEPOSES GANDUJE’S EMIRS.SANUSI SET TO RETURN

Kano State House of Assembly, on Thursday, passed into law, the Kano State Emirate Council Law (amendment 2) into law.

The repealed law, known as the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, was promulgated in 2019 by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration. After the law was signed in 2019, Sanusi’s Kano emirate was broken into five, in order to whittle down his influence. However, he was eventually removed and replaced with his cousin, Aminu Ado Bayero.

With the new amendment on Thursday, the new law abolished the Emirate Council Law and dissolved all the five Emirates created by the Ganduje administration; thus reinstating the position of the Emir of Kano, which is presently vacant.

The Kano State House of Assembly has therefore by this act dethroned Aminu Ado Bayero the 16th Fulani Emir of Kano and four other first class Emirate Chiefs established by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Gandije.

The four Emirs dethroned with Ado Bayero are Emir of Bichi who is Aminu’s younger brother, Nasiru AdoBayero; Emir of Gaya, Aliyu Abubakar; Emir of Karaye, Abubakar Ibrahim and Emir of Rano, Kabiru Mohammed Inuwa.

All appointments into the five Emirates by the former Governor in the five new Emirates under the repealed law of December 5, 2019 have therefore been abrogated.

The bill also provides for the restoration of traditional titles or office holders elevated or appointed under the repealed December 2019 law.

The Governor is designated as the sole authority to take all necessary measures to restore the status of the Kano State Emirates System to its position prior to the enactment of the repealed law.

The Assembly also outlined the responsibility of overseeing all traditional arrangements, including dealing with assets and liabilities of the abolished Emirates, including the new structures under the repealed law to the office of the Commissioner For Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

As a result, the deposition of Mohammed Sanusi II by the APC National Chairman is now nullified and Aminu Ado Bayero is now demoted to his former District Head status.

Some opinions however believe Sanusi automatically stands reinstated, but must wait until Governor Yusuf assents to the new law.

“So certainly with the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, the thing is to wait for the Governor to assent to it”.

Speaking shortly after the passage of the bill into law on Thursday, Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, said the new amendment mandated the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.

“The bill has been sent to the governor for assent, now there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates; Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye. The law now provides the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king”, he said.

The people of Kano await the assent of the Governor while the deposed Emirs are said to be out of town.

Aminu Ado Bayero was last spotted at the 90th birthday celebration of Oba Sikiru Adetona the Awujale of Ijebu Ode and 64th year on the throne.

Oba Adetona is one of the longest reigning monarchs in the country.
