REACTIONS AS DSS RE-ARRESTS EMEFIELE
Some drama ensued at the Federal
High Court in Lagos on Tuesday 25th July 2023 between operatives of
the DSS and men of the Nigeria Correctional Services.
Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos had
earlier granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20 million and ordered him to be
remanded at the correctional center pending the fulfillment of the bail
conditions.
However,
when the prison authorities attempted to take Emefiele into their custody until
he fulfilled his bail requirements, the operatives of the DSS contested their
actions, resulting in a fight.
Many
Nigerians have condemned
the Federal Government and the Department of State Services (DSS) for re-arresting
the suspended governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Goodwin Emefiele after
the court granted him bail.
Omoyele Sowore, presidential
candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election described DSS as
“lawless” and described the scene as “a show of shame”.
Reno Omokri, a former
presidential aide, on his Twitter handle said, “On this Emefiele matter, I urge
the powers that be to realise that life is like a wheel. The parts that are
down today may be up tomorrow when the wheel spins. And the One Who spins the
wheel is God. Let us be mindful of that. Mercy is a precious virtue in both Christianity
and Islam.”
A Twitter user, @Yerimaroy wrote “A total disgrace, our security institutions have been
rubbish(ed) to the dustbin. How can they be doing this without shame?”
@Dukeofsapele tweeted. “We
don’t have DSS. What we have is gangsters. Just look how shameless they are.
This is so embarrassing.”
The suspended CBN governor was eventually whisked away by the DSS.
The DSS is yet to make a categorical statement on the incident
