MILO'S FARM: A STORY OF PERSECUTION AND DESTINY

MILO'S FARM

Oluwamilomi was my classmate in HSC class. He was from somewhere around Ilesha, in Osun State. For want of a better shortened form for his name we chose to call him MILO.

Milo had a passion for farming.

I recall we also had a school farm. Agric students had their beats on the farm. Milo was everywhere. He knew everything about everything on the farm.

Later, Milo decided to cultivate a small piece of land beside the school farm. His farm became the standard and model for the school farm portions. When students had problems with planting or nurturing their seeds they consulted Milo. He was always willing to be of help.

Soon we started enjoying the proceeds from Milo's farm. Milo became a toast of the hostel. Milo was also a cheerful giver.

Unfortunately, some elements started beefing Milo. One fateful Saturday morning we woke up to the emergency bell. We all assembled to hear what was amiss. Thieves had raided the school farm. Investigations started.

Teachers and staff were sent to search our lockers. Some ears of fresh maize were found in Milo's locker.

To us students, there was nothing unusual about that. Milo was accused. We tried to protest but our voices were not heard. All our efforts to explain Milo had a farm fell on deaf ears.

Milo's traducers were stronger.

Milo was expelled from school for an offense he did not commit.

For weeks we wore long faces. We missed Milo so.

These things happen in life, when a man is wrongly accused and circumstantial evidence points to him. More worrisome is when some interests around are interested in nailing him.

There are so many innocent skulls at the gallows. "Ori yeye n'imogun, t'aise lo po"

Gladdened so much was I when I met my friend Milo again forty years after in 2018. Milo is today a very successful farmer. He has a very massive farm somewhere in Osun State.

Two things to learn:

Justice is sometimes misplaced due to circumstances and influence.

Secondly, never give up on a passion due to setbacks.

Milo was a born farmer and the conspiracy of that time did not deter him.

Always follow your dreams no matter the setbacks.
