OLAKULEHIN SET TO BE NEXT OLUBADAN

The 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan Land, HRM Oba Mohood Olalekan Balogun, is dead. He was aged 82.

The first-class monarch died at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan a few hours after he was admitted into the tertiary health facility on Thursday evening.

The late monarch, who reigned for two years, joined his ancestors late Thursday evening at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, after a brief illness.

Born October 8, 1942, Oba Balogun, who was a Fourth Republic Senator, represented Oyo Central senatorial district between 1999 and 2003.

He ascended the throne on March 11, 2022, after the demise of Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Oguguniso III. Adetunji, 93, had died on January 2, 2022, after reigning from March 4, 2016.

With the unique succession system of Olubadan stool, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the current Balogun Olubadan of Ibadan, who is next in line, will be officially announced after the traditional 21 days of mourning, as the next Olubadan of Land.

The remains of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, will be interred according to Islamic rites today, Friday, March 15, 2024, at his Aliiwo ancestral home in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Sulaimon Olanrewaju, his chief press secretary, confirmed Oba Balogun’s passing on Thursday night at the University College Hospital in Ibadan. 

according to a statement released by Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday. , the governor compared the late monarch to a tall Iroko tree.

“With complete surrender to the will of God, I proclaim our father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, coming to glory,” the writer said.

“In Kabiyesi, Ibadanland was home to a worldly and accomplished Olubadan who left his mark on history and accomplished a great deal quickly.

I offer my condolences to the Olubadan-in-Council, the state Traditional Council, the Oba Balogun’s immediate family, and the people of Ibadanland on behalf of the government and the good people of the state. God grant our late monarch’s soul rest; that is my prayer.

He continued, “Oba Dr. Balogun’s passing signifies the end of an era for Ibadanland and leaves a profound void in its rich history and heritage.”

Recall that the now passed away Olubadan took the throne left by his ancestors two years ago following the the passing of the late Oba Saliu Adetunji.
