NEWS: OLUBADAN: OLAKULEYIN FOR CORONATION JULY 12
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced the date for the coronation and presentation of staff of office to the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin. The ceremony is scheduled to hold on Friday, 12th July 2024.
Makinde, in a statement signed by the commissioner for
information, Dotun Oyelade, said that the Olubadan-designate would be given
staff and instruments of office on July 12, 2024.
This was conveyed via a statement from the office of the
Honorable Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade.
Oyelade said, “Our people must learn to be patient and
believe in an administration that has not let them down in five years”
He said insinuations and mischievous innuendos have not
derailed Governor Seyi Makinde from the path of justice and fairness.
He further advised the people of Oyo State and Ibadan in
particular to await the spectacle of the coronation and presentation of staff
of office.
Various interest groups and individuals had earlier raised
their voices over the delay in the coronation of the Olubadan-designate.
Olakulehin had earlier been nominated and appointed by the
kingmakers in April this year.
Many indigenes have expressed worry over the delay in the
coronation of the Olubadan-designate.
With this announcement, all speculations and insinuations have been laid to rest.
Olakulehin was nominated on Friday, April 12, by the Osi
Balogun, Oba Lateef Adebimpe at the Olubadan-in-council meeting held at
Olubadan Palace, Oja’ba, Ibadan.
This had put to rest controversies over the selection of a
new Olubadan of Ibadanland as the kingmakers, formally nominated the current
Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin, as the 43rd Olubadan of
Ibadanland.
The kingmakers who are also members of the
Olubadan-in-Council ratified the nomination of Olakulehin at a meeting held at
the ancient Mapo Hall.
The stool of Olubadan of Ibadanland became vacant following
the death on 14th March of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun who died at
University College Hospital (UCH) at the age of 81.
The Ibadan chieftaincy and traditional system is unique and
most rancor-free in this part of the world.
Since the creation of Ibadan in 1829 as a war camp for
warriors coming from other parts of Yoruba land, ascension to the throne has
been a smooth flawless procedure.
The Olubadan as the head of the entire system is not just
the ruler of Ibadan but the paramount ruler of the entire Ibadan Land.
The system is republican as against dynastic monarchical
authoritarianism which operates in other places. Governance is based on collective wisdom and
consensus at each level such that dictatorship and dissidence are not given
space in the system. Ibadan and her people have never changed the system that
runs like clockwork and engenders peace.
Ibadan has had 42 kings. The same system has produced the Olubadans without rancor.
